In the druggy, angst-ridden, early ’90s, a band called Nirvana was catapulted to stardom and along with it, an outrageous, foul-mouthed rockerchick named Courtney Love. When the world first encountered her in 1991, she was merely the girlfriend of Nirvana’s front man, Kurt Cobain. The two soon married, but it wasn’t long before her brash outspokenness—bolstered by the increasing popularity of her own band Hole—would begin to capture the nation’s attention. In a music business increasingly dominated by shy, mumbling and at times incoherent male rockers like Cobain and Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, Love’s moxie and bluntness, not to mention her abrasive stage persona, came as a breath of fresh air, and the public eventually embraced her as it had Cobain. Likewise, the media couldn’t get enough of Love’s raw in-your-face-ness and theatrical antics, chronicling her every move—the highs as well as the lows. She became a media sensation and subsequently, the master of a veritable media empire.

Lily Allen and Courtney Love drama at NME awards

NME awards

Putting several celebs in one room and filling it with booze can occasionally lead to dramas - and last night's NME awards was no exception, with Lily Allen and Courtney Love reportedly having a ding dong.

The Fear singer presented an award and performed at the show, before picking up the Giving It Back award for her Twitter treasure hunt-style campaign for fans to find hidden tickets to her gigs.

But it was later at the after-show party that tempers frayed. NME.com reports that a crew member overheard a slanging match between Lily and Love, which began when Courtney took offence at comments Lily had supposedly made on Twitter about her estranged daughter, Frances Bean.

According to the crew member, the singers began by chatting happily, before the conversation turned nasty, and the pair had to be pulled apart by friends. Courtney was overheard calling Lily a little girl and saying sarcastically: "Welcome to the music industry." It's believed Lily replied with a curt: "Why the f*** did you say that to me?" before leaving the bash in tears.

Courtney Love's comeback doubted

Shepherd's Bush Empire

Courtney Love claims her estranged daughter has no confidence in her comeback.

The 45-year-old rocker is about to return to the music scene with new album 'Nobody's Daughter’ but received very little support from 17-year-old Frances Bean, who she lost custody of in December.

Courtney – the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain – told Spin magazine: “One time, Frances was being mean and said, 'What are you going to do if the record fails?' Well, Frances, it can't fail because I love it, and I've worked really hard to make sure that I love it." Courtney is currently embroiled in a custody battle over Frances, who is living with her grandmother Wendy O'Connor and Kurt’s sister Kimberly Dawn Cobain after Frances took out a restraining order against her mother.

Courtney - who has previously battled drug problems – admits the ongoing case and her estrangement from her daughter are both taking their toll on her. She said: “I'm lost in a f***ing nightmare maze." As well as the battle for her daughter, Courtney is also beset by financial problems, and last year claimed Kurt's $750 million legacy had been stolen from her.

Love debuted the new lineup at a February 17 show in London and is due to unveil the act stateside in Austin, Texas, on Friday, March 19.

Courtney Love founded Hole with Erik Erlandson in 1989, and the group disbanded in 2002. In 2009, Love announced her plans to bring back the name with a new lineup. The new Hole - Love plus guitarist/songwriting partner Micko Larkin, bassist Shawn Dailey, and drummer Stu Fischer - is currently scheduled to release an album, Nobody's Daughter, con April 27.

Love and the new Hole lineup made their live debut in London on February 17, followed by one show each in Milan and Amsterdam. The SXSW show will likely be the group's first US appearance. The South by Southwest Music Conference is scheduled for March 17-21.
